He is saying that even if we might be using the same large display for TV program viewing and for web browsing, when we watch TV programming, we don't want interactivity. Which I've suspected to be the case from day 1, when people kept hyping up "interactivity" as being a byproduct of "digital TV."

Perhaps you are right, but this still does not make sense. Using Apple TV or whatever Google comes up is functionally little different than using a cable STB, or programming and using a PVR. You use a GUI to select a program, then sit back and watch it like any other TV program.

And I disagree that people will not do interactive tasks while watching a TV program. We often go to the computer to get additional information or check facts while watching TV. While this does not take place on the big screen, it still involves interaction while watching TV. This is likely to be even more prevalent when people have a second screen - tablet - that supports browsing and other interactive apps while linear programming is running on the big screen.

AND THEN THERE ARE GAMES...

A report this morning says that the new Apple TV box can support apps, as it is virtually identical to the iPad and iPhone and runs iOS 4. The only real difference is that the screen resolution is lower than the iPad, which means that apps and games will need to be tuned to run on it. And it has an additional flash RAM slot that is not currently being used. So I would expect that the next version will run apps and allow web browsing...

You've mentioned this many times, but I don't see the relevance. For one thing, in my home, we NEVER do this. And for another, I don't see that it changes anything. Some people keep the radio on all of the time, some do not. Some use TV in a similar way as those background radio people use radio.

Different strokes...

You are still stuck in the '80s...

Craig
