Exactly. Just the kind of detail the press hype glosses over. Both for
propagation reasons AND for channel capacity reasons, the "innocent" have a
way of ignoring what really matters. The result is a dense forest of cells,
meaning, lots of infrastructure. Not considered here is the RF energy density
homes will be exposed to.
Just the kind of flip-flop hype we have come to expect from Bert.
Not long ago, millimeter wave communications was going to change everything in
Bert’s mind. I remember many posts where I cautioned Bert about the problems
with coverage and interference at these high frequencies. Now Bert is jumping
on the bandwagon of research group closely tied to the cable industry.
That being said, none of the issues reported by Moffett Nathanson are
surprising, especially for a technology trial with NON-STANDARD hardware at the
beginning of the product development cycle. And YES, the telecoms have been
pouring on the hype themselves as they develop a competitive strategy to
cable’s wired broadband.
Perhaps the most interesting information in the article is the financial
issues. Clearly we are still in the very early phases of 5G product
development. It is absurd to pile up a bunch of meaningless statistics about
costs at this point, warning that it will take “millions of cells” that are too
expensive to deploy.
How many WiFi routers and devices with WiFi capability exist Bert?
Can you say “Hundreds of Billions?
There is a reason that Verizon, AT&T, et al are doing these technology trials...
It’s how new standards and equipment to support it are developed.
