[opendtv] Expected TV transmitter coverage areas

According to
http://www.mongabay.com/igapo/world_statistics_by_area.htm
the land mass of the USA is 9,629,091 square Km, and
population 280,562,489. And there are approximately
1700 full power stations and 4700 translators, for a
total of about 6400 TV towers, not counting LPTV,
according to the FCC.
Italy is 301,230 square Km, and population 57,715,625.
And according to
http://www.raiway.rai.it/torri.htm
there are about 1800 towers for TV and FM transmitters
(combined towers).
So, in the US, that makes 1504 square Km per TV tower
on average.
In Italy, 167 square Km per TV tower on average.
In urban areas, Europe tends to house its population in
higher concentration than US cities. And yet, even in
terms of TV towers per capita, the US has 43,838 people
per TV tower, and Italy has 32,064 people per tower.
One might argue that the US could make do with fewer
towers, if the networks would cooperate more. This
would only make the differences even more pronounced.
So this is what I was getting at, with respect to "low
power TV" European countries, such as Italy and France.
As DTT is deployed, it is deployed in those same sites
where PAL is today, at least in Italy.
With the transition to DTT in the US, potentially the
situation could become more acute, depending how the
existing 4700 NTSC translators are transitioned to ATSC.
