Latency has essentially nothing to do with the wireless link or 5G per se. It
has everything to do with distance between client and server, or between
clients, the b/s speed of the link and length of packets (comparable to
cabled broadband), and the speed of light. You can't fool mother nature with
hype. So, no need to wait for 5G. Especially when we know how much 5G will be
relying on that fiber optic backhaul network.
Latency is a measure of the delay in reconstructing the stream that is being
sent between server and client, or clients, as Bert correctly states.
Under ideal conditions, existing high speed networks can deliver low latency,
and again, Bert is correct that most 5G sessions are going to rely upon the
backhaul network to maintain the high speed they may enable.
What Bert misses entirely, is that latency is a major issue today with wireless
networks, and 5G speeds will help reduce latency compare with 4G and earlier
alternatives (relative to the frequency band being exploited). One major reason
is that higher frequencies coupled with wider overall bands, can dramatically
increase throughput - e.g. downloading a movie in seconds...
Of course there are trade offs - very small cells that may be subject to a
variety of interference issues.
