Just posting this because the new Audio Division chief ought to know
something about digital radio, with his background at Ibiquity? And perhaps
has more insights into how to "revitalize" AM, than just saying, "Move AM
stations to FM." Which is the current strategy for "revitalizing" AM.
I’m sure he is well informed on this subject. I’m also sure he is well aware of
the challenges that broadcast radio faces from the Internet, which is the
future of “digital radio.”
To date, the FCC seems to be entirely unaware of digital radio options. (Then
again, with Chairman Pai at the helm, anything new in radio will most likely
be shoved off on some other unrelated agency. Then again, Ibiquity/HD Radio
is not the only possibility, so one hopes that past allegiances aren't
carried over in the new job, which seems to be a major problem at the FCC
these days.)
These digital radio options have been available for many years Bert. They have
been broadly rejected in the marketplace, as the Internet has replaced
broadcast radio from major segments of the population, especially those under
the age of 30.
FM radio works. We just got several new stations in this market. AM radio still
has a place, as a high power back-up for FM. But we only need a handful of
these 50KW clear channel AM stations; lower power AM stations are now horse and
buggy technologies. Digital AM is an oxymoron.

Craig
