The FCC also disagreed with the WH trial balloon of revoking licenses of

issues have to be examined on a case by case basis. The WH should get on the
right side (meaning correct side) of these arguments with the FCC, for once,
and speak up on Chairman Pai's attempt to dismantle our century+ guarantees
of strict neutrality of the US telecoms.
Wake up Bert. Washington is a leaking sieve, as was illustrated once again by
the Axios article, which was updated and clarified by the WSJ.
At the White House this is not the exception, it has been the rule during the
first year of the Trump presidency. As the WSJ pointed out, this absurd idea
originated within the NSA - an agency that may have been misused to create and
perpetuate the “Russian Collusion” story.
The White House need not say a thing - policy in this area is the
responsibility of the FCC, with some input perhaps from the security community.
And these FCC statement got it exactly right - seem like even you agree for
once.
Amazingly, all commissioners seem to agree on this nationalized 5G wireless
infrastructure, although Rosenworcel didn't feel obligated to comment.
Clyburn and Rosenworcel are not stupid. They know this was another misguided
attempt to make the President and White House look out of touch with reality -
which is exactly why it happened.
(Still, there's the other side of this coin too. If you're going to jut your
jaw and make a big deal about saving "precious" RF spectrum, having multiple
overlaid, incompatible 5G networks in every location is not the way to go
about it. And having multiple different cellcos deciding what phones, and
what features on these phones, a consumer can buy or activate, is also far
from an ideal solution.)
We started with multiple incompatible cellular networks Bert, and the world did
not end. It was COMPETITION ( and technology) that ultimately led to widespread
compatibility and infrastructure sharing via the 4G LTE standards. The reality
is that 5G technologies will be deployed over virtually all of the spectrum
bands currently used for wireless cellular/data networks, as well as new bands
in the millimeter wave spectrum. And competition and technology are leading to
the harmonization of cellular and Wi-Fi in mobile devices.
We are not migrating to multiple incompatible networks again Bert, at least not
for cellphones. We may see proprietary fixed wireless broadband for years to
come, until the marketplace and technology vendors converge on interoperable
solutions, as we have seen with 4G/LTE.
And it was the competitive marketplace that allowed Apple and AT&T to break the
back of telco control over handset technologies and applications. The telcos
may still try to control the cheap throw away handsets at the entry level of
the marketplace, but consumers will not tolerate a return to telco control over
the smart phones and connected tablets the telcos sell today.

Craig
