Due to an unpleasant family task, I find myself decamped to Elko, Nevada through the end of this week. Last night, to get some space, I went shopping, with the idea in mind to buy a cheap microphone. I didn't find the microphone What I did find was a large selection of digital and DTV sets on display, with prices ranging from $398 (27 inch sanyo direc view) to $1995 or so (42 inch flat screen). EACH set indicated either "Includes digitalanalog tune" or "requires HDTV tuner." Many signs advocated the upgrade to HDTV. This in a town with only one local TV station, which I doubt is digital (I will try to check, but time is short). I don't know whether the pictures on all the sets were from ota sources: I saw many DVDs being played. All told, there were more than 15 different sets. What was the name of this retailer? Wal-Mart. With no Circuit City or Best Buy stores withn a few hundred miles. In other words, they are the electronics retailer in this neck of the woods. This is a wider and maybe deeper selection of DTV/HDTV sets than I have ever seen in a retail store. It's the first time I have seen honesty in the point of purchase marketing materials for DTV sets. If I wanted to whine, the only thing I can whine about is that they didn't say on analog sets that "analog broadcasting will cease at some point in the future."
