[opendtv] Finally cut the cord

Over the weekend I purchased two TiVo Premiere DVRs, and installed them in place of my DirecTV HR20 and my now-ancient HR10-250 TiVo unit.

Today I called DirecTV and had them close my account after seven years.

It's actually quite amazing what lengths they will attempt to keep me as a customer, but I was having none of it.

When asked why, I could report:
* Having to pay for hundreds of channels when I only want maybe a half-dozen that aren't available OTA * I held out for two full years with their promise of a new TiVo model that was never delivered.

I have Netflix streaming, though I'm concerned about their loss of Starz. Amazon downloads are splendid. I'm going to burn through a six-month free Hulu Plus subscription and see if I get any value from it.

The things I'll miss: ESPN on rare occasion, maybe twice a year. CNN when there's breaking news. The Weather Channel when there's breaking weather (it stayed on for Irene). TBS during the baseball playoffs. I might have a problem with NBC satellite channels during the Olympics next year. Many of those will stream live on the PC.

The two TiVos and lifetime service subscriptions cost me about the same as a year of DirecTV. Now I just have to hope that TiVo stays healthy as a company. :)
