It’s rather interesting that I have not seen a single word in any analysis of
this deal about the potential of the DOJ blocking this deal based on industry
consolidation issues. This is not vertical integration, as is the case with
AT&T and Time Warner; it is a classic case of consolidation in an industry
already considered to be an oligopoly, by what may already be the largest
player in the oligopoly.
This article notes that Verizon may have given up on acquiring these Fox assets
because of the DOJ effort to block the AT&T/TW deal. It notes that if Disney
prevails they will double their ownership share of Hulu.
I guess the media, which s largely owned by the media congloms, does not want
to discuss how much additional power Disney would have as a result of this deal.
