Because it's a racket, pure and simple. I also marvel at how individuals as well as companies get all excited about hyping up specific solutions, when it seems clear that there are already many ways of doing the same job. But they do it because they have vested interests, not usually because the idea they are hyping up is truly a game changer. I guess that HDMI does include audio, where DVI/HDCP did not. And a nicer, less clunky connector. And what about DisplayPort? If they had their way, they would displace HDMI. And so on. The article made the point that decoding the HDMI would still not be an easy proposition: "With the master key code it is possible to build devices that play copyright-protected content without having to pay for licenses. But Waldrop said that wouldn't be easy to do because the technology would have to be implemented in the chip. 'As a practical matter, that's a difficult and costly thing to do,' he said."
