I worked with Charles and Bill (Glenn), and Gary Demos and many others... These arguments for backward compatibility are completely bogus. They are rooted in the analog world, and too often in phosphor and CRT display science. In our digital world it is only a matter of computational power to convert virtually anything to anything. With more computational power we can deal with more algorithmic complexity, and with algorithmic abundance tuned to specific tasks. There are good reasons that computers have wiped out most dedicated video processing hardware businesses. There are good reasons why Apple created the QuickTime architecture to deal with inter format conversions including color space conversions. Final Cut Pro does not care if you are using a proprietary codec from Sony or Panasonic or JVC. > Hmm. > Our new best friends, The Standards Committies--All Several of 'em. Governments regulate and tax. Industries create standards to protect themselves from the competition enabled by technological evolution. Charles won the battle but lost the war. He made a living helping companies understand color space and conversions, until most of the potential clients died from backward compatible illogical thinking.
