A friend brought this to my attention: Heavyweight TV makers join to develop Internet TV standards - and they want Linux in it! According to http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/bth/japanese_standard_inte rnettv_20060814, http://informitv.com/articles/2006/08/05/internettvplans/, or http://www.generation-nt.com/actualites/17594/, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and Hitachi are understood to be developing a joint Japanese standard for internet-connected televisions to address competition from the computer industry for broadband video services. To create the standard, the group has formed a company called TV Portal Service. No official site yet, as far as I know. "To reduce boot up time and to avoid virus infections, the companies are avoiding the use of Microsoft Windows and will instead use the Linux operating system." . Despite probably right, the reason for using Linux, instead of Windows may also be to protect themselves from the TV market invading Microsoft. Maybe a good push for efforts like http://www.mythtv.org and http://www.cadsoft.de/vdr.
