I do understand the scanning and display fundamentals, I simply became
confused by the arguments.

I'm in complete agreement Bert.
Being a fan of Soccer, a game that can not be fully enjoyed if one can not
see the movement of player "off the ball', I find that having a full 16:9
image available vastly improves my enjoyment of the game; 4:3 simply
doesn't do the trick!

I am surprised you also misunderstand how common sides works.
The HD version is identical to what you now see from 16:9 HD cameras.
The SD version has the additional throw away areas - top and bottom, but
the 4:3 HD image is resampled to SD resolution.
Think of what a 16:9 HD football broadcast would look like if letterboxed
on an NTSC TV.
Now fill the throw away areas of the NTSC display with what the 4:3 HD
camera sees.
Remember that the cameraman is framing everything for the 16:9 safe image
area - i.e. exactly the same framing as would be used with todays 16:9 HD
cameras.

Craig
Of course somebody - definitely NOT Bert - will want the larger 4:3 HD
image to be delivered to next generation 4:3 HDTV displays...
