Wow Bert. All of your media hero’s are falling on their swords...
Ouch!
First ESPN’s Skipper resigned, after his Cochin habit was exposed.
Now Les Moonves is out at CBS, as more women speak out about his behavior.
Meanwhile ESPN is facing future uncertainty - not because of the decline in
MVPD homes forced to pay for the ESPN channels, but rather because the network
has turned sports into another political forum. And CBS All Access has found a
tiny niche with about 2.5 million subscribers.
Turns out that CBS screwed up again, and I’m not talking about the #MeToo
issues that were pervasive across the entire Hollywood/Mass Media landscape.
CBS screwed up in the early ‘90s, forcing affiliates to demand retransmission
consent cash, rather than using the leverage to build new cable networks like
the other broadcast networks. Net result is that the CBS broadcast network is
still doing well, but the company missed the boat on expansion into cable. Then
CBS tried to “go its own way,” as the streaming media market began to grow.
They did not join the other networks in building Hulu, and then launched a
narrow vertical streaming service - CBS All Access - at a time that new
streaming “bundles” began to take off.
Net result?
Moonves is out and CBS - now the smallest of the media congloms - and the
broadcast network is likely to be sold...

Craig
