The Engineering Emmy Committee of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has voted to investigate a number of technologies for possible Emmy-award recognition. The fact that an investigation is taking place does not mean there will be an Emmy award; conversely, there can be more than one award for a single technology.
To make a recommendation to the main committee, the investigative subcommittees must first consider whether a technology is Emmy-worthy. The main criterion for that is whether it already "materially has affected television" (with a broad definition of "television"). If a subcommittee decides a technology is Emmy-worthy, they must next determine who deserves award recognition. It can be one or more individuals, companies, or organizations. There is no restriction to the U.S. or to the present day.
Here is an abbreviated list of the technologies under consideration. If you think you have information that would be helpful to one or more of the investigations, please let me know, and I will let the appropriate subcommittee know. By the way, if you see a title that's puzzling and wonder why the committee didn't just call it by its trade name, know that, at this stage, that's not permitted:
