Is it that NBC is already up against its 39 percent national cap for ownership of OTA stations? I just cannot figure out why NBC would complacently sit by and let the Gainesville/Ocala markets go without its HD programming. Nor do I see why NBC would allow itself to be at the mercy of Cox to kindly carry programming that isn't even available in a local affiliate. The same goes for the CW network. Why do they rely on the good graces of the ABC affiliate, who is (evidently) more interested in carrying ABC programming in HD than CW programming? This really baffles me. If I were NBC, I would first buy or lease (or beg someone else to buy or lease) one of those unused transmitters in Gainesville, then I'd start broadcasting all my HD in HD, then I'd advertize everywhere that this is available to anyone with an HD receiver, and then I'd chuckle when Cox immediately agrees to carry NBC programming in HD. There has to be a way for bean counters to put a $ value on the fact that folks with HD sets, that ever growing population, will give more weight to HD wide screen programming than SD narrow screen programming, all else being roughly equal. NBC and CW must know that they are losing potential viewers to other HD programs available in Gainesville and environs.
