It’ a little bit apples and oranges. The old school MVPD service being a local
monopoly, where OBVIOUSLY the monopoly can get away with a lot, while the OTT
sites are business that compete over a telecom service. Anyone who didn’t get
this, even, back in the late 1970s or early 1980s, was just not thinking. It’s
to be expected, that consumers prefer the service that is easy to opt out of,
and go to a competitor instead, as opposed to the service that still operates
as if they have the consumer over a barrel.
But what makes this sort of article particularly frustrating is that it points
out just how incompetent and/or corrupt today’s FCC is. The Chairman cannot
come to grips with the difference between these two types of industries, trying
to deflect attention by confusing the dumbasses with discussions about the
practices of Facebook and Twitter. Like that’s any of the FCC’s business.
Every opportunity he gets, the Chairman reiterates his same ignorant
banalities. The Internet was never regulated prior to 2015, he repeats. I guess
he’s just that unfamiliar with how the Internet operated before the broadband
era, and how the Title II telcos would have been far happier if it didn’t
exist, back then. And just to prove his incompetence, he says, “See? We
deregulated and nothing changed.” As if this sort of change would happen
overnight.
There’s another article floating around that points out how in a couple of
other countries, where the OTT services are not as good as they are in the US,
perhaps also due to less advanced forms of broadband(?), the dissatisfaction
level is more comparable, between MVPD and OTT services. I still think these
comparisons are apples and oranges.
