Hopefully they can be recycled. Or used with one of those cheap converters, 
even if you can't change channels when recording (unless you're there do do 
so). Or you may want to keep one around to play old pre-recorded VHS tapes.

There are some good DVD recorders now for sale, with built-in ATSC receivers. I 
don't know about VCRs, but really DVDRs are very similar, only better. They too 
can record up to 8 hours on one DVD+RW or DVD-RW (most seem to work with either 
disc these days). Or you can make more archival copies on record-once discs.

I've been using my DVDR very much like a hard drive recorder for the past few 
years, just recording over the same disc over and over. Which is why I decided 
to go for a DVDR with built-in hard drive.
