Adobe is not throwing in the towel, they are attempting to prevent their competition (Fluendo, Wowza, ...) from snatching up more of their market share for Flash Media Server. They spent a few years with their heads stuck in the sand and are now paying for it. Competitors have basically come along, implemented Adobe's streaming protocols (including their HTTP dynamic streaming), and offered other protocols on top of this (i.e. Apple HLS, WebM, etc.). All this proves is if you want to push a media delivery server, you had better implement the protocols your customers are asking for. Unfortunately for Adobe, many customers have already abandoned FMS for this and a number of other reasons. I should also add here that Adobe have done nothing special to enable playback in Safari. HLS works in Safari by default.
