"The industry has also fought calls from advocacy groups that want to
pay only for the channels they want to watch. Cable operators say
that the amount of programming would shrink if consumers bought only
a few channels, because the most popular networks effectively
subsidize the less popular ones." -"Cable Relents..." NY Times, 12/13/2005

I thought we were a Capitalist economy? Shouldn't the popular networks
survive, and the ones no one watches not?

While certain polls might point a different direction, I think media
companies are completely disconnected with what most people want. And I
think à la carte would help show what people really are willing to pay for.
And I think that the family market is bigger than the media companies want
to admit.

So if the family market would be so profitable, why don't media producers
focus in that area? I have my believes, but consider the movie industry.
Movies that relate to children are by far the most profitable and the
longest running in the theater. So why not produce more kids films? I
believe it has more to do with what the producers want to produce than with
what the consumer wants to see. I think the same is true for the TV
industry and they are unwilling to face the fact.
