Not all that rare in a software driven world.

But once again Bert, you missed the point. The original post was about a technology that allows for modifications of the HARDWARE, after the product has shipped.

Forward compatibility requires forethought, and the desire to support extensibility.

Neither of these things are/were true about the ATSC standard.
