TLM posted: http://www.telecompetitor.com/abi-u-s-ott-video-market-grew-more-than-50-in-2012/ Precisely what I've been predicting, by the way: 1. Content owners becoming more interested in OTT sites as a distribution medium, which in turn creates more consumer interest in the medium. 2. The TV networks "enhancing catch-up services" because they see consumer interest. 3. Ad-supported, non-subscription TV gaining in popularity thanks to the Internet medium. Before the Internet, it took a closed off an proprietary distribution medium to achieve substantially more choice that OTA free TV could provide. With the Internet, you can technically support a lot more choice than even traditional MVPD "broadcast" can, while not having the leverage of the walled in distribution medium necessary before. So, as much as the content owners like their dual-revenue streams, they are probably figuring out that broader distribution of ad-supported content will benefit them in the long run. The key to all of this was the introduction of affordable broadband Internet access. But there's another odd key ingredient at work here too, IMO. It looks like the average joe out there is amazingly adept at using the Internet to stream this TV content to his smartphone and tablet, but becomes dumber than dirt when it comes to demanding the same functionality from his TV set.
