I can appreciate the technical purity of a pan-scan-zoom option, to view HD 
material in SD displays. In fact, allowing the viewer a continuous zoom, even 
without the pan-scan, would be a useful feature always.

Quite honestly, though, most of the time, watching HD content as SD, full 
frame, is no problem at all. HD PVRs being an incredible rarity for all but the 
strictly-tethered crowd, I watch most of the HD downconverted by my Philips 
DVDR/PVR, using the second-highest quality record setting (66 hours of 
recording time). Really and truly, not a problem, from my typical viewing 
position.
