Craig insists on armwaving, with these broad generalities.

So will Bert try to tell us, yes, 4K streaming is still
problematic, but everyone can enjoy HD now?

Not at all. If the BS we read is close to correct, the bit rate required for 4K
would be no greater than the bit rate required for HD over H.262. And with the
new codec in that EE Times article, again assuming the hype is close to
correct, even less bit rate than required for HD over H.262. So, no big impact
on the network per se. The impact would be more on the source and destination
boxes.

The reality is that only a small percentage of the population is using video
streaming now,

The reality is that in 2013, Netflix subscriptions surpassed HBO. That's just
Netflix.

But edge servers do not solve this problem. You cannot pre-cache live events
to
bypass congestion. You need reliable WAN pipes that connect to every ISPnthat
has Sling subscribers,

Craig continues to pretend he knows what he is instead guessing. First off, to
reach multiple ISPs simultaneously with live broadcast content, multicast in
the interexchange carrier nets is also possible, even if the ISP nets locally
prefer to remain with unicast. So managing live events that many people want to
see simultaneously is a doable do. Secondly, Craig should explain to us how
MVPD nets today reach their distributed in-network DVRs, with VOD content.
Then, Craig should explain how this solution can be adapted to wide
distribution of live material to edge servers, for those ISPs that insist on
using unicast.

I address this. Programming from ONE network IS NOT programming from MULTIPLE
networks - there is a reason the word MULTIPLE is used in the acronym MVPD.

Cut the crap, Craig. Whatever you claim, I can come up with a counterclaim.
Netflix and Amazon and Hulu offer programming from multiple networks, and yet
they are not MVPDs, The simple fact is, Sling TV is no more similar to walled
garden MVPDs than are any of the OTT sites that not even you couldn't pretend
were MVPDs.

That's the most credible point. MVPDs are different because they act as the
single gatekeeper for all your TV channels.

Not true.

They act as one of a limited number of "gatekeepers" of content that is ONLY
available in subscription bundles. They do not offer everything - I can't get
Netflix House of Cards

Craig insists on drowning us with irrelevant information. Things are changing
today, Craig. The MVPD model is suffering exactly for this reason. But the MVPD
model was developed for a time when they were *the* gatekeeper for everything
going to the TV, for those such as Craig who faithfully subscribed. Yes, today
the MVPD has lost that local monopoly. And what Craig seems unable to grasp is
that the fragmentation we are seeing is a trend.
