Uhhhh Bert. The FCC has o legal authority over these services. NONE.
Under Obama they tried to sneak the ability to regulate OTT services in under
the Title II Net Neutrality order...
Remember the proposal to standardize consumer OTT devices, and the attempt to
regulate copyright over the Internet?
Even where they do have authority - local stations that withhold their signals
in retransmission consent disputes - they are powerless. Congress gave the
broadcasters the keys to the MVPD kingdom in 1992,which the congloms used to
a=take control of all content, whether delivered via cable, satellite, or OTT.
Presumably, HBO itself wants to get their content out to as many subscribers
as possible. To achieve this, HBO would make use of as many distribution
options as possible. If any middleman pulls the content, HBO could opt for
direct Internet distribution, or freedom to use other Internet aggregation
sites. This would not only discourage blocking HBO by the middlemen, but it
would also train consumers into bypassing the nuisance middlemen. And such
trained consumers would never go back.
Earth to Bert.
HBO has already done this - it is called HBO Now.
Any Dish subscriber can simply subscribe to HBO Now, while AT&T and Dish work
out their differences. And they can unsubscribe when the dispute is settled,
since there is no annual contract for HBO Now.
In a more perfect world, HBO would never need to be corralled either by
Dish/Sling TV or by AT&T/DirecTV.
WOW. We must be icing a a perfect world!
I think that the average consumer is far more intelligent that the clueless
clowns at this FCC. I think that when 22 million write in to voice support
for neutral telecoms, they are well aware of the alternatives. Only our
crooked FCC Chairman has the brass to promise the wonders of "new business
models," from non-neutral telecoms.
Same people who fuel the inaccurate political polls, designed to influence,
rather than predict the outcome of elections.
