A little strange, much like the part of ATSC 3.0 that is supposed to address
all of the "on demand" and "interactive" stuff. To someone who has been using
Internet-delivered TV for a very long time, it's a little puzzling to see
what role these organizations need to play. Euro TV networks have been on the
Internet at least as long as the US networks have, perhaps longer. Many allow
people in country to stream everything, whether live or on demand. And have
done so for many years.
Maybe, they want to sell little streaming boxes, under the DVB-I banner, sort
of like the Rokus and AppleTVs? Who knows.
There is nothing puzzling about this Bert. It’s what they do!
Comes out of the same pea pod as the ongoing MPEG standards for just about
everything that already exists.
Will this be irrelevant?
Absolutely.
ATSC and DVB are essentially patent pools that are attempting to create royalty
streams from the IP of their member organizations.
The “real” world is leaving them behind.
