I agree with this sentiment Bert. The ONLY important aspect of localism is the
commercials that broadcasters deliver, and maybe some of the public service
announcements and local event promotions.
Most radio stations don’t even deal with news anymore, and local TV news
continues to decline. The reality is that there are now many ways to promote
localism via the mobile devices we all rely on today.
When people flock to Pandora or Spotify, they are voting with their actions.
They get all the diversity in programming that they care about, diversity in
ownership is a big who cares, localism is another big who cares, and
terrestrial radio is clearly unimportant to the FCC. Maybe that's okay, but
when this FCC is consistently disingenuous, it becomes a turn-off.
Yes, there is PLENTY of diversity out there. Local radio is doing just fine,
and will continue to do so as it migrates to the FM band. Competition is a good
thing.
Local TV is another story... people now look to broadcast TV - if they watch it
at all - almost exclusively for entertainment.
Here’s and idea for you Bert.
Let’s let the broadcast networks own a national footprint of stations, and let
everyone compete with them (e.g. Sinclair) if they want to try to reach
consumers via an antenna. And let’s set some standard rates for retransmission
consent payments by the (V)MVPDs that want to carry these broadcasts; but these
payments should go to the treasury to pay for the spectrum the broadcasters are
using...
