TVTechnology: McAdams On: Aereo’s Hail MaryHail Mary? How about inevitable
outcome? Aereo claimed they weren't a cable company. SCOTUS said they were.
Now Aereo is acting like a cable company and wants to negotiate with the
broadcasters for retrans rights. By law the broadcasters can ask for
compensation in exchange for retrans consent, or any broadcaster not included
in the lineup can demand carriage. Where's the Hail Mary?
Other than Aereo's now increased costs will force them to raise their prices,
lowering their advantage over "traditional" cable TV and DBS, and possibly
lowering demand.
