Bert is upset with the huge salaries for professional athletes, and the
distortions that this introduces into the markets for TV entertainment. This
article reveals the reality, and similarity with sports, about the markets for
pre-produced movies and episodic television: there is a limited amount of
talent available to create this form of TV entertainment.
This brings to mind the “success” of Mark Schubin’s annual Palm Springs
retreats; the people who attend the HPA Tech Retreat continue to enjoy the
latest chapter of “The Golden Age of TV Entertainment.” Business has never been
so good, despite the fact that the tools for video creation are now accessible
to the masses.
One cannot “create” without the tools of the trade...
But the number of “star” creators is not growing in proportion to the demand
for high quality content , just as the number of “star” athletes remains a very
limited quantity.

As the streaming wars intensify — Disney’s steaming service debuts Tuesday —
companies are fighting to land creative talent. The skirmish is so fierce and
the talent so scarce that competitors end up hiring the same creators.
