The rules for broadcast TV are archaic. They created a oligopoly that still
reaps massive rewards from competitors.
It comes as no surprise that there are those in Congress that wish to protect
the oligopoly and prevent new competition. There are also those who wish to end
the political management of telecommunications in the U.S.
The FCC has outlived its usefulness - if it ever was useful. It created highly
profitable monopolies and oligopolies, slowed the deployment of new, and
improved technologies, and blocked the development of new competitive
industries. Enough!
I do not advocate eliminating broadcast TV; it may still play a role in the
overall mix of mass media. But its time that broadcasters PAY for the right to
use the public airwaves. Congress should authorize an auction of the broadcast
TV spectrum, limited only by the ability to own only a single station in any
market.
