The cable industry already has fiber as deep into their networks as will ever likely be necessary (at least for systems that have been upgraded to digital (700-900 MHz). The local coax loop in the neighborhood has plenty of bandwidth to meet future needs. The only change that will be necessary is to reduce the number of subscribers per local loop as subscribers start to use more bandwidth and VOD services. The current architecture typically has 200-500 subscribers in each node. The cable companies can upgrade gradually by adding more amps and lighting up more fibers to create new nodes with fewer customers. And then there is the possibility that they might eventually scrap the copper all together, using wireless connections to handle the last few hundred feet. Of course, the RBOCS could do this too, putting transmitters on the poles in your neighborhood.
