Incidentally, having lost my backpack when I fell into the caverns of Kalte, I
would imagine that my guides kept the pack, and I was able to reclaim its
contents at the end of the adventure when I reunited with them.
This may be a fair point, in principle -
(there is a Lone Wolf Club Newsletter where Joe Dever says a very similar thing
re: your equipment in The Cauldron of Fear - your kit had been confiscated by
the guards at the city gate - Joe said he felt sure the "saviour of Tahou" would
have his stuff given back to him!)
- however it's maybe rather moot in The Caverns of Kalte,
as there's nothing much you could have acquired in your backpack from Books 1, 2
or thus far in Book 3 that you'd want to keep for the future. (The first such
item is the conc. Alether potion that gives you +4CS, later on in book 3, which
comes with a free replacement backpack!)
