The most obvious sign that a book should have been half the length it is is if
the name of the author on the cover is “Pigres of Halikarnassos.”
Pigres of Halikarnassos was an ancient Greek poet who lived in the early
fifth century BC who, according to the Souda, a tenth-century Byzantine
encyclopedia, was notorious for having composed his own version of the Iliad,
which was exactly like the original in every way except he inserted one line of
dactylic pentameter after every line of the original dactylic hexameter, thus
producing an epic in elegiac couplets that was twice as long as the original.
Of course, you cannot really add anything of value to the original by adding
one line after every line of the original because you end up just interrupting
the text with a bunch of meaningless chaff. Thus, the opening lines of Pigres’s
elegiac Iliad were:
Μῆνιν ἄειδε θεὰ Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχιλῆος.
Μοῦσα· σὺ γὰρ πάσης πείρατ᾽ ἔχεις σοφίης.
/Not: Grekiska bokstäver, blir möjligen skräptecken hos vissa./
“Sing goddess the wrath of Achilleus, son of Peleus!
Muse, you indeed possess the source of all wisdom.”
The second line is irrelevant and adds nothing at all to the poem, but Pigres
added it just because he needed to finish off his elegiac couplet.
Amazingly, though, Pigres was not the only writer in ancient Greece who wrote
a reworking of the Iliad like this. Two other poets, Timolaos of Larissa and
Idaios of Rhodes, are also described by the Souda as having written their own
versions of the Iliad which added one line after every line of the original.
Another poet, Sotades of Maroneia, wrote another version of the Iliad using a
different meter he made up on his own called the “Sotadean.”
According to the Byzantine writer Eustathios of Thessaloniki (lived c. 1115 –
c. 1195/6 AD) in his Commentary on the Odyssey, the poet Nestor of Laranda
rewrote the Iliad, only, instead of adding lines like Pigres, Timolaos, and
Idaios, he omitted a letter from each book. Supposedly, Triphiodoros of Sicily
rewrote the Odyssey, omitting the letter sigma from every book, supposedly
because he suffered from a lisp.
