"Scientist and science fiction author Geoffrey A. Landis will receive the 2014
Robert A. Heinlein Award. The award recognizes outstanding works in science
fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space. In
addition to publishing numerous short stories and novels, Landis works for NASA
and has been involved with the Martian rover project. The award will be
presented on May 23, 2014 at opening ceremonies during Balticon 48."

Förtroendevald avgår...på klingonska!
"David Waddell, a city councilman in Indian Trail, N.C. (pop. 33,518)
announced his resignation from the town council with a four line letter written
in Klingon, ending with the Klingon phrase for Perhaps today is a good day
(to) resign. Waddell, who is midway through his first term on the council, has
said that he can be more effective as a citizen attendee and also needs more
time mount a write-in campaign on the Constitution Partys platform for Kay
Hagans U.S. Senate seat. His resignation becomes effective on January 31,
2014."

"Author Neal Barrett, Jr. (b.1929) died on January 12. Barrett began publishing
science fiction in 1960 with To Tell the Truth in Galaxy. He continued to
publish short fiction throughout his career, but most of his work was at the
novel length, with early works such as Kelwin or The Leaves of Time giving way
to more complexly created worlds and narratives in the late 70s with his Aldair
sequence and Through Darkest America. In addition to his science fiction,
Barrett published a lot of work for hire, including volumes in the Hardy Boys
and Tom Swift series, often under pseudonyms and house names. Barrett was name
Author Emeritus by SFWA in 2009."

UFO Sveriges Clas Svahn har varit uppe i Norrland och lett dykare som plaskat i
sjön Nammajaure. Där skall någon av de "spökraketer" som rapporterades under
sent 40-tal ha kraschat. Mer här:

Under sent 40-tal började Kalla kriget hetta till, och det kom många rapporter
om "spökflygningar" över framför allt norra Sverige. Det skall väl inte
uteslutas att öst och väst någon gång ibland kränkte det svenska luftrummet,
och ev raketer kan ha varit testrobotar (även om de vid denna tid var ganska
primitiva). Men uteslutas skall inte heller att folk i många fall helt enkelt
såg i syne...
