The latest is continued, even worsened deadlock in the Academy...
After the letter from Danius, Espmark and Engdahl ("we'll be back...if
Engdahl quits") Academy member Kristina Lugn said that if Engdahl is forced to
resign, she'll resign too. The Academy would then be only 11, still below the
12 needed to elect new members.
Ms Lugn was the lady I spotted in the Old Town Wednesday. She really looked
like someone having deep problems and much too think about. "Lugn" means calm -
but that she wasn't.
How is this mess going to end?
My own guess (pure speculation) is that the remaining Academy could go to the
King and ask him to *appoint* new members, The 1786 king, Gustav III, started
the Academy by appointing 2/3rds of the members and asked them to elect the
rest. So the 2018 King, Carl XVI Gustaf, would presumably have the same powers
to appoint members.
But I'd expect they'd have some difficulties finding qualified people willing
to step into this hornets nest...
To dissolve the whole Academy and select an entirely new one looks more and
more realistic. Even if the present mini-Academy could get few more members,
their reputation is in shambles and their work atmosphere is poisoned.
There'll be more to come. We haven't yet heard from police and prosecutors
about their investigations. That's sure to generate more headlines.
