Litet rymdnyheter... Rymd och science fiction hör ju ihop!
En asteroid stor som ett hus (15-30 m) passerar nära jorden torsdag morgon. Den
passerar på "bara" 44 000 km avstånd vilket är nästan satellitavstånd
(geostationära satelliter ligger på 36 000 km) och bara en åttondel av
avståndet till månen. Bl a NASA har länge haft koll på asteroiden och det är
ingen risk att den krockar med jorden. Den passerar som närmast torsdag morgon
kl 5.41 GMT (vilket borde motsvara 7.41 vår tid).

NASA:s djuprymdsprojekt är i fara - pga plutoniumbrist! Rymdorganisationen har
bara 35 kg plutonium 238 kvar, vilket skulle räcka till en och en halv
djuprymdsond (Cassini-sonden behövde 23 kg). Plutonium är kraftkällan i en
sorts atombatteri som driver sondernas system. Längre ut i solsystemet -
ungefär bortom Mars' bana - duger inte solceller, då solstrålningen blir för
svag. Plutonium 238 har en viss men mindre användning i kärnvapen
(huvudkomponent är plutonium 239) så man kan inte enkelt få frasm mer plutonium
238 ur gamla stridsspetsar.
