* The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin has made
available a portion of its Gabriel García Márquez collection in a free, online
archive. The archive contains approximately 27,500 items including “manuscript
drafts of published and unpublished works, research material, photographs,
scrapbooks, correspondence, clippings, notebooks, screenplays, printed
material, ephemera, and an audio recording of García Márquez’s acceptance
speech for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.”
* The Clarion and Clarion West Writers Workshops are both accepting
applications for their 2018 Summer Workshops. The Clarion Workshop runs from
June 24 – August 4 and will feature Christopher Barzak, Holly Black, Mat
Johnson, Kij Johnson, Kelly Link, and Gavin Grant. The Clarion West Workshop
runs from June 17 – July 27 and will feature Daniel Abraham, Ken MacLeod, Yoon
Ha Lee, Karen Lord, Karen Joy Fowler, and Ellen Datlow. The application

"The deadline for eligibility to nominate works for the 2018 Hugo Awards is
December 31, 2017. Anyone who wishes to nominate for the 2018 Hugos must have a
supporting or attending membership to Worldcon 75 in Helsinki, Worldcon 76 in
San Jose, or Worldcon 77 in Dublin by that date. This reflects a change in
World Science Fiction Society (WSFS) rules which moved the eligibility deadline
from January 31 "
* The Neukom Institute for Computational Science at Dartmouth College is
accepting submissions for its newly established literary awards. The Neukom
Institute Literary Arts Award for Speculative Fiction and the Neukom Institute
Literary Arts Award for Debut Speculative Fiction are open to works published
after June 1, 2015. The deadline for entry is December 31, 2017. Each award
comes with a $5,000 cash prize
* The 2017 Goodreads Choice Awards have been announced. Selected by the
readers, the awards are presented in numerous categories with multiple rounds
of voting. Categories with winners of genre interest are listed below.

* In a joint statement during SMOFCon 35, both Worldcon 76 in San Jose and
Dublin 2019 (Worldcon 77) announced that they will present Retrospective Hugo
Awards for 1943 and 1944 respectively. The 1943 Retro Hugos for works first
published in 1942 will be awarded in a ceremony to be held on August 16, 2018
at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose CA.
* Behzad Mesri has been charged with various counts of computer fraud, as well
as wire fraud, interstate transmission of an extortionate communication, and
aggravated identity theft as a result of hacking HBO’s servers and stealing and
releasing episode of Game of Thrones early. Although he has been indicted,
Mesri, who is Iranian, is not currently in custody.
* The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced the winner of the Diverse
Writers Grant and Diverse Worlds Grant. Both grants of $500 were awarded to
Erin Roberts. The Diverse Writers Grant offers support to new and emerging
writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups whose marginalized
identities may present additional obstacles in the writing/publishing process.
The Diverse Worlds Grant is presented for work that best presents a diverse
world, regardless of the writer’s background.
* Andrew Kreisberg, a Producer on WB’s The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and
Supergirl, has been fired following the investigation of sexual harassment
complaints lodged against him by several women who worked on the shows. Three
weeks after Mo Ryan reported on the charges, Warner Bros. Telvision Group has
announced that Kreisberg was being terminated.
* Fan Perdita Boardman (b.Perdita Lilly, 1931) died on November 26. Lilly was
first married to author Ray Nelson /not: han som uppfann propellerbeanien!/ and
in the 1960s married New York fan John Boardman. She hosted Lunarian meetings,
ran the con suite for Lunacon, and with John hosted First Saturday meetings.
She also made the banner for the NY in ’67 Worldcon bid.
* E. Lily Yu is the 2017 recipient of the Gar LaSalle Storyteller Award.
Established and funded by LaSalle, and awarded through a partnership with
Artist Trust, the award recognizes “outstanding work by an established or
emerging author of fiction based in Washington State” and comes with a $10,000
grant. Prior recipients are Peter Mountford and Anca Szilágyi.

* Jeanne Gomoll has been named the winner of the 2017 Rotsler Award for best
fan artist. The Rotsler Award is sponsored by the Southern California Institute
for Fan Interests. Established in 1998, the award carries an honorarium of
US$300. Sue Mason, Mike Glyer, and John Hertz served as this year’s judges.
