I Fatbursparken på Södermalm, Stockholm, finns i ett hörn bokbyteshyllor. Där
lade någon av okänd anledning ett nr av sf-blaskan Analog, jan-feb 2016. I
bokavdelningen fanns en recension av Affront förlags engelska antologi Waiting
for the Machines to Fall Asleep (2015 som E-bok och, misstänker jag,
PoD-pappersupplaga; översättare anges inte, sv uppl I väntan på att maskinerna
skall somna).
Mig veterligt har ingen uppmärksammat att USA:s kanske främsta sf-magasin
recenserat (av Don Sakers) denna svenska samling med 26 noveller. (Utom
förlaget självt på sin hemsida, men då bara nämnt med citat på sju ord.

räkat samlingen, inte minst på nätet, men svenska sf-cirklar tycks ha missat
att antologin uppmärksammats av klassiska Analog, Astounding alltså - John W
Campbells gamla blaska! Och det var tur i fataburen att jag såg det.
Det finns inte på nätet (googlifieringskollade), men nu finns det - ty då
räkan är hyggligt kort citerar jag hela:
"For historical reasons we tend to think of science fiction as mostly an
American artform. This view has never been true. Sf is a worldwide field, as
the pulbishing world continues to open up opportunities for small and
micro-presses, more international sf is making its way to our shores.
In Waiting for the Machines to Fall Asleep editor Peter Oberg collects
twenty-six stories by as many authors. As far as I can tell, none of these
names are familiar to American readership.
The breath of this anthology is impressive. There's a bit of fantay and a
smidgen of horror, but the vast majority of the stories fall under the sf
umbrella. A few themes occur over and over: relationship between Humans and
machines of all sorts, including AIs; the impact of bioengineering technology;
and dystopian futures. Religion pops up in more stories than I expected. Many
of the tales have surprise twists.
So what makes this anthology Swedish (other than the Swedish authors, I
mean)? What, if anything, sets it apart from any other speculative fiction
anthology? If there is any common demoninator, I'd have to say that the whole
collection is somewhat darker than Americans are accustomed to.
That's not to say that all the stories are dark, or that there isn't humor
and hopefulness here. The humor, however, is mostly dark and ironic; the
hopefulness is more subdued.
Take, for example, one of the best stories: "The Rats" by Boel Berman. In the
distant future, a scientist tries to deal with mutant rats who are swarming
around the world. He does this through the agency of a virus that gives him
ability to ampathize with the rats, thereby allowing him to work with the rats
to control their spread.
O2 "Quadriellnnium" by A R Yngve, in which a transhuman family gathered from
across the Solar System uses a programmable biological android to reeenact
gruesome old myth in celebration of Winter Solstice. In Christina Nordlanders
poignant "The Preserve Humankind", robots devise a rathe rchilling and
disturbing mthod of fullfilling their duties.
Each of these stores - all fairly short - is like a shot of akvavit. There're
refreshing and invigorating, but you'll want to space them out in order to give
your head time to clear."
Det är en ganska positivt: "like a shot of akvavit...refreshing and
invigorating". Många av författarna (se länken) är kända från SKRIVA och
Fantastiknovelltävlingen, så jag hoppas det haft visst inflytande på att
svenska sf-novellister visar framfötterna.
Konstigt uttryck, förresten. Vad skulle man annars visa? Bakfötterna?
