Hi Maureen, I haven't tried it at home, where I'm using XP and IE7! However, I'm using a similar setup here, as I've yet to upgrade to Windows 7. I clicked on the link in your email, and in the edit field, wrote: "from: lower mount street Dublin to: baggot street." I didn't use quotes in my search. I then clicked on Search the Map, and got a number of possible routes. There was a link for walking directions. On choosing this, I got a table with directions. I clicked on some of the links twice, to activate them. Remember, from and to should be followed by a colon! hope this helps, Eamonn PS: an attempt to send this yesterday failed, so apologies for the delay. A very happy Christmas to all VICS members. I then went in again and inserted where I wanted in edit field and pressed "get directions button". I now realise that one must go into "get directions" before inserting the place direction requirement, at least that is the way it is now working for me. Thanks and Happy Christmas Tim, Maureen. What happens when you try it? You can also try the updated google maps, though you will probably need a up-to-date version of a screen reader and internet browser in order to benefit from it. I used this link on a number of occasions and found it terrific but I now find that google have taken the accessible page off which greatly disappoints me. Maybe you might have a look and see if you can resurrect another link! With thanks, Maureen. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Culhane" <tim.culhane@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 8:26 AM Subject: [vicsireland] Accessible google maps Hi all, Well I've done a bit of digging around and have come up with something. It appears that google maps can be set to give textual directions rather than a graphical map. To see this in action try the following: Go to: http://maps.google.co.uk/?output=html The 'output=html' tells google to use html rather than pictures. In the edit field type something like: from: O'Connell street Dublin Ireland to: Whitworth Road Dublin Ireland The 'from: and 'to:' are important. I believe other keywords like 'near:' exist, but I haven't tried them. Click the search maps button. You will then be given the directions by car from O'Connell Street to Whitworth road. You can click on a link which will give you the walking directions as well. It gives you the approximate distance and time taken to complete the journey also. Note, it will only give street names and distances, so you might find it tricky if you were blind in a strange area. Having said that, its better than nothing.
