Dear all, The NCBI Centre for Inclusive Technology is pleased to announce the publication of the first draft of a new set of Universal Design guidelines for Digital TV services and equipment. You are invited to comment. The guidelines have been developed on behalf of the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD, www.universaldesign.ie) with the input of many stakeholders. You will find the guidelines and a template for submitting comments at http://www.universaldesign.ie/digitaltv. Comments can be submitted up until Friday 25th November 2011 by email to lbrowan@xxxxxxx The guidelines are aimed primarily at broadcasters, consumer equipment manufacturers, programme makers and policy makers. They contain guidance on how to ensure that television services, equipment and programmes can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people, regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. They cover the following areas: - Consumer equipment, connectivity and set-up - On-screen user interfaces (menus, EPGs, etc.) - Remote controls - Documentation and consumer information - Programme content - Translating, Subtitling and Captioning - Audio description - Visual Signing - Customer service We would welcome comments on any of these areas. Also general comments about whether they are suitable for the audience, understandable and easy to read, complete, helpful, realistic, etc. All suggestions will be taken into account in improving the guidelines. The guidelines will become part of the online suite of guidelines for information and communication technologies that the CEUD develops and maintains for the web, hardware, software, smart card services and public access terminals.
