Hi all, The one thing I would say about broadband in general, whether
attached to fixed lines or wirelessly transmitted and really I suppose for
satelite is that it is not as good as the optimistic marketers tell you.
If you are attached to a fixed line and that line is new and there isn't a
mnassive amount of traffic that is your best bet for a consistent high level
of service. Sadly those conditions are not met in very many places.
Wireless should be good, but when you buy it find out what the contention
ratio is, how many people are sharing your particular bit of bandwidth.
That will only really give you an idea of how reliable speeds will be, as
the amount of traffic further back down the system is relevant.

For instance at the moment most of the breakdowns and slowdowns we get on
the DAWN network on the islands of cape, sherkin and heir, are due to
problems between here and cork, not within our own network. The last major
breakdown was at an aerial at cork airport.

Satelite intrinsically has a slight delay on it, because of the transmission
distance, which tends to mean that skype is not perfect. It is as far as I
know always true that the upload you are likely to be given on a setelite
connection will be lower than the download, for a reason I can't remember as
we stopped using satelite about eighteen months ago as our network feed.
From an individual's point of view I haven't heard of a satelite package
anyway near as cheap as wireless or fixed line.

Like gardening what I would do is ask someone who lives close to you what
works in your area. The whole broadband infrastructure is under a lot of
pressure at the moment. Best guess is that in two to three years the
upgrading may have caught up with the increase in customer pressure both in
numbers and demand for more and more bandwidth.

End of generalised wisewords. But I think everyone with a broadband
connection should try using a dial up again once every six months just to
remind themselves how well off they are, so they don't persecute people like
me trying to provide a broadband connection.

All The Best

Ed

Hay Tony,

I was with them a few years ago and my connection kept dropping very
frequently. It drove people crazy. especially on msn because I kept
signing in and out.

I didn't find their support great either.

That's just my experience though. If your going with them, good luck.
I hope it goes well.
