Hi Joan Ann,

You use JAWS? and doesn't your JAWS have OCR for such scanned image pdf's? The file will open in Adobe Reader, and, if it's an image, you may get a message: Alert! Empty Document; in which case you then invoke JAWS OCR with JAWSKey+SPACE, o, d. If JAWS then says, 'cannot find OCR component' or something similar, then you can either download that, or download and install the full version of JAWS again, or repair JAWS.

Of course, Kurzweil 1000 should recognise it anyway.

Hi Cearbhall
I can't open the document in Adobe as it is a scanned image. I am going to
see if I can open it in Kurzweil.
Thanks for the link. It is very informative.

Joan Ann.

Joan Ann,

Since you have already been opening PDF files in Word, this file must be
faulty in some way.

It looks as though the encoding is not being recognised by Word in the
format that your PDF files are normally matched. So, try opening the file
with Adobe Acrobat. If that, also, gives an error message, then can you go
back to the source of the file and get a better copy?

You can check what your Windows default setting is in Options in MS Word.

Here is a useful article that should make all this clearer and explains
various things that you can do:

and-save-files-60d59c21-88b5-4006-831c-d536d42fd861#bm2

All the best,

Cearbhall

Subject: [vicsireland] Encoding in word

Hi all

I am trying to open a PDF document in word which I have had no problems with
in the past. Now it is asking me to select the encoding I want. The options
I have are:

Windows default

MS DOS

Or other encoding.

When I choose windows default the text in the document is just random
letters and signs. Is there a way that I can fix this please?

Thanks

Joan Ann Brosnan.
