Hi VICS Members, It's fast approaching, and everything is set up thanks to the hard work of the Committee - Thanks Guys! Here are the details. The VICS Open Day 2006 will be held in Galway on Saturday November 18th. The event will take place at the Victoria Hotel Eyre Square, from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM. We have a busy and interesting day planned. In the morning, from about 11:00 until 1:00, we will hold seminar style presentations on various technologies. These will include GPS, Accessible MP3 Players, Braille Displays, Notetakers, Text to DAISY software, Screen Readers, Magnification Software and much more. Just before lunch, we will hold a Q&A session, where VICS members can ask specific questions of the committee, or seek clarification on any aspect of VICS business. This will be fairly informal, and will afford members a chance to make their concerns known, and to give feedback on the day and VICS in general. We will break for lunch at 1:30, and resume at 2:30. In the Afternoon session, the theatre style seating will be removed from the conference room. It's now your chance to get hands-on! All the cool things you heard about in the morning will be freely available for you to examine for yourself on stands set up around the room, with people at each to give you one-to-one demonstrations and to answer your questions. We are privileged to be welcoming Humanware and Dolphin UK to our event this year. Humanware will be presenting all their cool Bluetooth Braille Displays, Notetakers (I want a Braillenote PK badly!), and the rest of the cool things in their inventory to us. They have some really nifty things, I'll be hanging round their stand for a long while. Dolphin are coming to demonstrate their really impressive Text to DAISY software. Brian and I saw this in Sight Village this year, and it is really fantastic. In addition, they will be presenting their new version of Supernova, which is a combination screen reader and magnification package. On their stand in the afternoon, they will have a range of their products available for examination by you all. The presence of large technology companies at our open day is a first for VICS. It proves that we are being recognised world wide for the work we do; it makes me so proud! We are publicising the event well. Our press release has been accepted widely, and we are getting quite a bit of airtime on radio etc. A big thanks to Marian Nolan and Tom Langan for their help on this. These are our contacts on the ground in Galway. I think there are rooms still available at The Victoria Hotel. The Committee are travelling to Galway on Friday, and staying until Sunday. So, if you fancy a weekend away packed with technology and a bit of craic with your fellow VICSonians, get yourself there. To contact The Victoria hotel, call 091567433. Let them know that you are with the VICS conference, and you can avail of the special room rate we have worked out. It is E99 per room, per night. This works out at E44.50 per person sharing, per night. As always, if anyone has any questions, feel free to call me on 0872211491, or email me at tony.murray@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx See you there!
