Hi Maureen,

I think it is recommended to turn Holux off when charging.To turn it off you
move the switch towards the short side of the rectangular box. .

I think it has a number of lights one for the battery charging and one for
the satellite signal.

I charge it overnight.  The manual says that its charge should last for 10
hours work.  This seems true from my experience.  One thing though, it is
worth remembering to turn it off when you have finished to preserve the
battery charge.
