Evening all,

Well having updated to IOS 4 on MOnday, I thought some of you might like to know some of the new things it has to offer.

The first thing to say is that the interface is very similar. This is good, as the learning curve between version 3.3 and 4 isn't huge. There are a few new voiceover gestures on the device, but all in all this part is very similar to earlier versions.

FOr me, the most radical change is the way one enters text. As we chatted about on a previous thread about 10 days ago, the way text has historically been entered is to find the letter and (using one of two methods) tap twice on the device. While this option is still there, there is now a new way to enter text which I personally love. NOw, one can change to a "touch typing mode". This means that to enter text you: 1. place the finger on the screen. If it is the letter you want, then just lift the finger off and it's entered.
or
2. Place the finger on the screen in the vicinity of the letter you want. If it isn't the one that you want, slide the finger across the device until the one you want is announced. THen just lift the finger off and, as they say, voilá.

Voiceover also works now with bluetooth braille displays, and indeed one can also pair the Apple Wireless Keyboard with the device. This means that (if you choose to carry one of these things, or someone develops a compatible fold-up keyboard) you can now do text entry using a conventional button-based keyboard.

Ok I've waffled on enough. This is just a flavour of what's new, and I haven't explored all of the new features yet. I'll continue to post updates on the off-chance someone finds this stuff useful.

Cheers,
