Hello Tony and Philip. I appolagise if I am wrong in what I was talking
about but well, it is just an opinion and I am glad to have been able to
bring up some debate about it.

This did all stem from the Infovics comments thread and what I would say
is that by being able to listen to the mag I do feel that I am getting a
lot more than just being apart of the vics mailing list cause I do know
in fairness the amount of time that goes into production work to produce
a mag like that.

Couldn't agree more with the rugby. A fantastic result but I won't say
more as I have definetly gone off topic so sorry.

Cheers, Nicky.

Hi Nicky,

Good points, and definitely something to be raised at the AGM. If you
can't
make it (and I hope you can especially because post meeting pints are
lots
of fun), you can forward a motion by sending a letter to the secretary,
Gerry Ellis.

Just to clarify, our standard membership encompasses the island of
Ireland,
not just the republic. We have several paying members in the north. In

that sense, we are rather like the glorious Irish rugby team! How they
did
us proud last Saturday.

Cheers,

Tony

That is grand Tim. If I can make it I will certainly do that. I was
just of the understanding that people living outside of the republic
don't have to pay that is all but if I have misunderstood anything that
is fine.

Cheers, Nicky.

Hi Nicky,

I think this is something you should bring up at the AGM.

As far as I can see, there is nothing in the constitution which prevents
us from charging overseas members.

Personally, I agree that the access to infovics should be limited to
members, though how we go abouts it will need a bit of thought.

Tim

Hi Stuart, I would be of the opinion that it should be
only for paid up members of the VICS societyl. Isn't it what we are
partly paying membership for? Now, going slightly off the point but I
have said this to certain people so I might as well say it publicly. I
also think that all members of VICS be it that they are from Ireland or
outside of Ireland should have to pay. We are always reminded of the
need for cash from the members to help vics do their work and the work
of vics is directly benefiting us people that live here in Ireland and
not the people living outside of the country. Maybe people might
disagree with me but I am throwing it out anyway.

Cheers, Nicky.

Hi Flor, Tony and Kathleen,

Again apologies for my delayed responses on this
thread, but I am only now picking up my two day's worth of Vics emails!

Flor, you are correct, that in the past,
Infovics was only available to paid up members of Vics.

One of the things I wanted to do when I took
over as editor, and one that I felt was something that would benefit the
magazine, was to put it on line. There are two reasons for this. 1.
Its a computer and technology related publication and therefore the most
appropriate place for it to have its home would be the internet. 2. It
would bring the publication to a much larger audience, already I have
received mails from people outside of Ireland and of Vics, who have just
stumbled across the magazine and the Vics website.

We could of course try password protecting the
area of the site that contains Infovics and issue all members with
logins, but I suspect this will create more headaches and possibly
increase frustration amongst some of our listeners and is really an
issue for the committee to look at in the future.

It is also my view, and I know Liam Duke of the
Drumcondra Project shares it, that Infovics should, in the not too
distant future, become an on-line publication only. We're not saying
that this might happen immediately, but I would certainly see it being
implemented in a couple of years.

Kathleen, regarding your query, I will make a
downloadable link available so that you can get the Infovics mp3 file
without having to subscribe to the podcast.

Tony, I think that should also help you with
your query too.

Regards,

Stuart.

Hi Stuart,

Personally, I think I'd prefer the longer issue
at less-frequent intervals. (I.e., quarterly.)

Regarding direct downloading of the magazine and
related issues and questions: At the moment, it seems that anyone can
'subscribe' to the podcast and not be a member of VICS. Correct? Is
that what we want? I thought the 10 euros anual subscription also
included the magazine, which was formerly unavailable to those not in
VICS. There were articles from other PC magazines courtesy of readers
for BCAB, in the issue that came out last winter. These articles would
be copyright of the original magazines (such as PC World, etc.) Need to
be careful there? These things may not matter at the moment; but if
Infovics expands, they will. I think it may be possible to download the
magazine directly at the moment, via the Save-Target-As option. Maybe a
little futzing around then to download the magazine rather than just the
url to the stream. .

Hi Tony,

Apologies but I have had to change the
subject line, for some reason the
Ecartis system thinks I am trying to
make a subscription change, so here's
hoping this goes through!

Interesting comments there.

Firstly, you can't actually download
Infovics, but you can subscribe to the
podcast, which will in turn download the
mp3 file to your hard disk.

However, if people would prefer the
option to directly download the magazine
I can easily make this change.

In particular though, I'm interested to
hear your commenting that you prefer
a shorter Infovics at more regular
intervals, to a more lengthy magazine,
say every three months.

>From a production point of view, a
shorter magazine is obviously easier to
manage, but of course its only easier
because we had very little material to
go onto it.

Could I get other's views on this? Is a
shorter and more regular infovics
preferable to a three monthly edition?

Regards,

Stuart.

Hi All,
I have just been listening to Febs
Infovics online and although it was
short, what particularly I was impressed
with, was Brian Dalton's
mini-tutorial on the ripping programme,
CDEX.
I have an iAudio player and had been
wondering how I could rip tracks to my
PC as MP3's so I can then if I wish move
them to my iAudio.
Anyway, problem solved
thanks to his great effort!
I haven't received the CD version of the
magazine, so if you haven't then
just go online and listen!
I was trying for a link on the site to
download but I couldn't find one!
Could someone come to the rescue and
tell me how?
I can record the item of course but it
would be good to be able to download
it!
Keep up the training element of
Infovics, it is very good and very necessary
in my opinion.
I liked the link to Nationwatch, because
sometimes for example when you go
away on holidays you might not always be
told or even discover a great deal
of information about the place you are
visiting.
Anyway I would prefer a shortened
Infovics more often rather than a long one
every-so-often.
Happy listening.
Tony Sweeney.
