Hi Cearbhall and Tim, Many thanks for this. I use an Excel spreadsheet for keeping track of my clock-ins at work, in case any amendments have to be made. It will be handy now not having to manually enter the day and date each day. You then say that you want to fill down one column. Which did you want to do? Actually, you can place the series in either a column or a row. The Row procedure: If you wanted to place the numbers in row 2 starting in field B2 because you have headings in column A and row 1, You would do the following: Type a 1 in B2. The cursor is now in b2 so hold down the shift key and arrow right until you have completed the number of horizontal cells that you need. Let's say you go as far as g2 in this example. You now follow the steps below to fill in the series. The numbers will grow from 1 to 6 starting in b2 and incrementing up to 6 in g2. The Column procedure: To place the series in one column, for example, column B and starting with b2 to avoid row and column headings. Type the number 1 in field B2. Hold the shift key and arrow down the column until you have highlighted all the rows you want. In this example of six fields that would take you down to b7. Next you follow the series procedure set out below: The "Fill Series" Function: When the row or column fields have been highlighted with the value 1 in the first field, use the fill series function in Excel. To do this: 1. press alt-e for the edit menu 2. press I for the "Fill" menu 3. Press "S" for the series dialog 4. Check that the step value is 1 (this is the default) and ignore all the other fields in this dialog. 5. Arrow down to OK 6. Bingo! You now have the series you wanted. Using shift and the arrow keys is fine for short ranges of up to ten fields but is very hard to control for large ranges. To highlight a long series of fields I would recommend that you use the extended selection function which is carried out by using f8 and F5. If you need help with the highlighting just let me know and I will explain how to do that. I then want to auto fill the rest of the column with numbers, increasing in sequence so that c1 contains 2, d1 contains 3 etc. Anybody know how I can do this from the keyboard?
