Dear all,
A while back, there was much talk about the unavailability of Irish
Rail's online timetable on the "visual impaired" version of their
website. Since then, NCBI CFIT have been in contact with Irish Rail
and are now working with them to improve the accessibility of all
aspects of their website.
The situation at the moment is that Irish Rail are fully committed to
accessibility. They are undertaking a complete redesign of their
website and a key consideration is that that the new site will be
fully accessible. To get the ball rolling, they came in yesterday for
a "user experience" session at CFIT's new dedicated user testing
facility within NCBI's offices in Whitworth Road. They were able to
experience, first hand, what it is like for a vision impaired person
to access their site using a screen reader. They learned a lot about
the kind of problems that arise and the extent of the difficulties.
This has given them a greater insight into accessibility from the
website user's point of view. We now intend to continue working with
them during their redevelopment process, providing accessibility
expertise, implementation support and, crucially, more user input. As
with any serious website development, this will take time, so the
results will not appear overnight. However, we feel confident that
this collaboration will result in a site that is fully accessible to
all Irish Rail's customers.
