Dear All, On Tuesday 8th April Microsoft officially retired Windows XP and will no longer support the operating system with security patches and general updates. We know that lots of NCBI service users and listeners to our technology podcast have questions and concerns about how this end of support may impact on their use of Windows XP, and we have therefore produced this special Technology Podcast Extra which can be downloaded at http://www.ncbi.ie/sites/default/files/podcasts/podcast_extra_april_2014.mp3 Joining Stuart on Skype is NCBI's Technology Support Officer Paul Traynor who outlines some of the main issues to be considered, talks a little about what users of XP can do to keep their machines running safely and gives some recommendations for upgrades and alternative software solutions. Amongst the offerings mentioned are AVG and Avast, both of which offer excellent protection free of charge against viruses and Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, a paid product which offers 'premium PC protection from all internet threats'. If you have queries after listening to the podcast you can contact Paul Traynor by calling our tech support help line on 1850 92 30 60.
