Hi all,

I have been trying to use Overdrive Media Console to download and read audio books.

I am using a Samsung Netbook with Windows 7 Starter with Firefox and NVDA as a screen reader.

I kept getting the following error message:

"A connection to the internet could not be established
(the system cannot find the file specified)"

I tried several approaches (see previous mail below) to no avail, but now have
the solution:

I needed to make Internet Explorer the default browser. Previously Mozilla
Firefox was the default browser.

Interestingly, this didn't jump out as an obvious answer to any of my Google
searches, it was just a lucky guess.

Simple as that!

I don't know if Media Console can be got to work with other browsers, but at
any rate, it now seems to work okay with Internet Explorer.

Ronan

Hi,

I am having problems with Overdrive Media Console. This is software
that allows you to download and read audio books from a library such as
NCBI. This worked once and I was able to read one book but it doesn't
work any more!

I am able to download the link to a book (an ODM file) but when I
click on this to download the book, I get a message from Overdrive Media
Console
"A connection to the internet could not be established
(the system cannot find the file specified)"
If I go into Overdrive Media Console and select the Check for Updates
option on the help menu, I get the same message. I think this shows
that the problem is clearly between Overdrive Media Console and the
internet.

I definitely have a working internet connection and am able to browse in
Firefox at the same time as I get this message.

I googled the error message and found that this is a known problem and
there are a set of solutions to try.

I have tried the following as recommended:
- Temporarily turned off Windows Firewall
- Confirmed that the firewall in my EIRCOM router is set to permit all
outbound connections
- Temporarily turned Microsoft Security Essentials off
- Deleted and re-installed Overdrive Media Console.
- Tried running Overdrive Media Console as an administrator
- tried NCBI library as well as South Dublin Library

I am using a Samsung netbook with Windows 7 Starter.

I have checked all running processes looking for security or web
accelerator applications. I don't think there are any, but maybe I am
missing something here. Has anyone any suggestions on what security or
accelerator programs might be lurking on the Windows 7 system that might
block Overdrive Media Console?

At this stage I would normally conclude that Overdrive Media Console
just won't work on my machine. However, it worked for one download when
I installed it first. I guess I must have changed something since, but
I am at a loss as to what it might be.

Any suggestions gratefully received!!!

Ronan
